102 Things to do in Japan
posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, April 30, 2012
People visit Japan for many different reasons — cultural experience, urban exploring, as a spiritual or intellectual journey, to visit friends and relatives, to shop, to pursuit a hobby (e.g. photography, skiing, surfing) or to experience Japan's amazing dining, entertainment and nightlife.
Whatever your vision of the perfect vacation in Japan — this list will help you make it a reality.
1. Visit Temples / ShrinesJapan has around 85,000 temples and 95,000 shrines. Many temples and shrines are amazing — wonders of the World. Every major Japanese city has at least a few impressive temples and shrines. Kyoto has thousands of them.
2. Attend a Matsuri (Japanese Festival)Festivals are Japan at its best — the fun side of Japanese culture. With approximately 100,000 festivals going on every year in Japan it's usually possible to find something that matches your travel schedule. Consider scheduling your trip to coincide with one of Japan's best festivals.
3. Enjoy Urban ExploringMost visitors to Japan spend much of their time exploring Japan's fascinating urban environment. Tokyo alone has 50 neighborhoods that are worth exploring. Tokyo's architecture, people and culture are worth a look — go for a walk. Osaka, Sapporo, Yokohama and Nagoya are also great urban environments.
4. Relax in an OnsenWhen Japanese people travel in Japan — they usually head for onsen. Be sure to read up on onsen manners before your trip. Otherwise, something embarrassing might happen.
5. Experience Japanese NightlifeJapanese people enjoy life. Tokyo's restaurants, bars, pubs, izakaya and clubs are busy every night of the week. Nightlife in Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Kyoto, Kobe and Fukuoka is also fantastic.
6. Visit KyotoKyoto was the capital of Japan (for more than 1000 years) until 1869. If you only visit two cities in Japan — Tokyo and Kyoto are the places to go. Kyoto never disappoints.
7. Go Shopping in GinzaGinza is the largest luxury shopping area in Asia. If you only see one neighborhood in Tokyo — Ginza is a good choice.
8. Stay in a RyokanRyokan are traditional Japanese Inns. They feature Japanese style buildings and rooms. Ryokan offer the charm of old Japan — it's a recommended experience.
9. Dine at a Kaiseki RestaurantKaiseki are traditional Japanese multi-course meals. Kaiseki is fine cuisine.
10. Sing KaraokeKaraoke is a fun experience for couples, friends or large groups.
