102 Things to do in Japan (Part 9)

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, May 06, 2012

81. Attend a Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony is a cultural tradition related to Zen Buddhist and Japanese aesthetics. The rituals of tea ceremony are precise — people can spend a lifetime seeking to perfect them.

82. Try a Sento (Japanese Public Bath)

Sento are similar to onsen except that they use artificially heated (tap) water. They're conveniently located in urban neighbourhoods throughout Japan. Many Japanese people visit their local sento daily.

83. Shop at a 100 Yen Shop

Japan's 100 Yen Shops sell a wide variety of products for 100 yen (similar to a dollar store). They're worth a visit. It's amazing what can be picked up for 100 yen. They usually sell souvenirs.

84. Buy Some Japanese Candy

Japan has a dizzying array of candy products. Many of them are excellent.

85. Dine at a Japanese Family Restaurant

Japanese Family Restaurants are chains of inexpensive restaurants that offer big menus and reasonable prices. People in Japan are nostalgic about them. Many spent their youth over coffee in a family restaurant.

86. Visit a Maid Cafe

Waitresses at Maid Cafes dress as maids (cosplay maids). They more or less act as if they're your personal maid with greetings such as "welcome home". It's innocent enough.

87. Check Out Shibuya

Shibuya is Tokyo at its most Tokyo — bright lights, crowds, culture, entertainment, dining and shopping. Shibuya Crossing is one of the urban wonders of Japan.

88. Shop at the Food Floor of a Japanese Department Store

Locals know — the best food in Japan is found in the basement floors of department stores. Most department stores have one or two floors of food stalls selling cakes, chocolates, ready to eat foods, vegetables and groceries. They're interesting to explore (even if you're not hungry).

89. Stay in a Capsule Hotel

The much famed Japanese Capsule Hotel is a product of the 1980s and 90s. They're fading away due to competition from manga cafes (internet cafes). Japanese manga cafes are so comfortable that people sleep in them. Some people are living in manga cafes.

Capsule hotels are more comfortable than you might expect. They're for individual travelers and are separated by gender (separate floors). Some capsule hotels are men or women only establishments.

90. Go Hiking

About 73 percent of Japan's area is covered by mountains. Japan has hundreds of hiking trails and mountain climbing sites. Climbing Mount Fuji in the summer climbing season is a recommended experience.
