8 Tiny Japanese Classic Cars (Keijidosha 360 cc)

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, January 31, 2012

After WWII there were great hardships in Japan. Many people drove tiny cars that were only 150 cc. In 1949, the government created special regulations that taxed such vehicles at a lower rate. These cars were called keijidosha (kei cars).

The economy improved and soon nobody wanted to drive such a low spec car. In 1951, the standard was changed to 360 cc. The standard was changed again in 1976 to 550cc.

Kei cars from the 360 cc era are popular with classic car enthusiasts. Examples include:

1. Mazda R360
