Calpis: Try To Pronounce It Without Giggling

Calpis is a series of milky sweet beverages in Japan. It contains water, nonfat dry milk, lactic acid and sugar. It's produced through a process of fermentation. It has a light, milky taste and is very mildly bitter.

Calpis was first introduced way back in 1919. The first marketing campaign claimed Calpis Soda looks like the Milky Way. Calpis comes in many forms: carbonated (Calpis Soda), uncarbonated (Calpis Water) and Calpis Concentrate.

The concentrate version was most popular before WWII because it kept well without refrigeration.

These days, Calpis has hundreds of varieties that come and go each year. It is also co-branded with other Japanese soft drink and candy brands.
