The Cold Welcoming Taxis of Sapporo

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, February 02, 2012

Sapporo is cold in winter. On this February day it was -8 °C (17 degrees Fahrenheit). Despite this, Sapporo taxis wait at taxi stands with their downs open. Often they seem to wait for 30 minutes or more like this. It's a great example of Japanese hospitality.

Taxis in Japan are expensive. However, the drivers are polite and wear white gloves. They are often former salary men (office workers) who need to augment their pensions.
