Geisha Get A Bullet Train Snack

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, March 08, 2012

Friday afternoon at Kyoto station (shinkansen bullet train tracks). A Geisha and a Maiko waiting for their train decide to get a green tea. They walk a few feet to a convenience store. It takes 25 minutes (they see people they know and are asked for photographs by several strangers).

Geisha are like rock stars in Japan. Fictional geisha appear in pop culture (movies, manga, anime, television, books).

In 1920, there were around 80,000 Geisha in Japan. Today, there are only around 1,000 Geisha.
