The Gion Festival (The Month Long Kyoto Party)

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, November 27, 2011

The Gion Festival is perhaps Japan's most famous festival. Running the entire month of July each year — it's also one of the longest.

The festival takes place in Kyoto's Gion district. Gion is Japan's most exclusive Geisha entertainment district.

The peak of the festival is the Yamaboko Junk parade on July 17.

The streets of Gion are reserved for pedestrian traffic for the three days (July 14-16) leading up to the parade. Vendors offer traditional festival snacks and games on the streets during these days. Many people attend dressed in traditional yukata.

This is perhaps the best event in the World to get candid photos of Geisha and Maiko.
