For example, they hold the Asahikawa winter festival at the same time as Sapporo's snow festival. Asahikawa also seems to compete with Sapporo's massive Susukino entertainment district.
For a small town (350,000 people) Asahikawa have a great deal of entertainment — including hundreds of hostess clubs.
Asahikawa's entertainment district has a distinctive Japanese 1980's feel (bubble era).
It's strange to see women walking around in the deep snow in skirts and shorts. Asahikawa gets over 6 meters (20 feet) of snow every year.
Asahikawa's entertainment district seems innocent enough. It's mostly hostess clubs and "pubs". Pubs also have hostesses but they tend to be older and the focus is on singing (not conversation).
There are also plenty of izakaya, cheap eateries and karaoke boxes.
