How Geisha Relax

In the Edo and Meiji eras, Japanese masseuse were primarily blind people.

Blind people were thought to have a superior sense of touch. It also had a practical side — it provided employment in an age when accessibility options were limited.

Here a geisha relaxes after a long night entertaining customers (end of 19th century).

There's also a long history of blind massage in other Asian countries including China and Korea.
