How to Find Fun Tokyo Nightlife in Hidden Places

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, October 13, 2011

Visitors to Tokyo are often disappointed with Tokyo nightlife.

Tokyo has the best night life in the world. (really, it's true — Paris, London, New York, Berlin, Hong Kong there's nothing that compares).

So why can't tourists find it?

Fear, excuses and jetlag

When you're in Tokyo you have to check out the nightlife. There are no excuses. It doesn't matter if you need to wake up at 5 in the morning to go to the fish market — get out there.

Hella lost

You need a map — electronic is better than paper. You need to ask directions. Even the locals do it.

You need a destination

I don't know how many tourists approached me in Tokyo saying something like:

I thought Shibuya had lots of clubs. I don't see any.

Japan isn't set out in nice grids — you could be 200 meters from the biggest club district in Asia — but it could take 4 hours to find it.

You can't ask directions if you don't have a destination.

Roll with it

Most tourists can't read Kanji. They walk past a myriad of bars, karaoke, hostess clubs, restaurants and clubs but don't realize it. Experiment! Go inside!

Travel is about taking a leap.

Motherly Advice

The one exception to experimenting is that Tokyo has several red light districts that can be somewhat dangerous. Use a little common sense.
