Japan Loves Uniforms

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, March 01, 2012

Visitors to Japan (arriving at Narita airport) immediately notice something: everyone is wearing uniforms. All the workers at the airport wear uniforms: stewardesses, the guys on the tarmac, baggage handlers, information desk staff, staff of the train companies — even the taxi drivers.

It is not just the airport: Japan loves uniforms. Virtually every profession in Japan has a uniform. Every school kid in the country wears a uniform. Uniforms are also used to sell products. All these uniforms contribute to Japan's uniqueness as a culture.

Most Japanese people genuinely like wearing uniforms. Japanese culture values "fitting in" over "being special". Workers in the West might talk about "being forced" to wear a uniform. In Japan, a uniform is considered a perk.

Train company uniforms indicate rank and position.

Uniforms make staff seem more professional. After you've been in Japan for a while — it's hard to believe it when staff wear street clothing.
