Japanese Snacks Not As Unhealthy As They Look

posted by Emiko, Japan Talk, February 04, 2012

Check the label of your favorite snack foods and you're likely to find ingredients with long chemical names (that sound artificial).

Many of the ingredients in snack foods are new chemical compounds that human beings have only been eating for 5 - 20 years. Their health effects aren't well understood.

In Japan, I'm often pleasantly surprised when I read the labels of snacks foods. Snacks that look like their probably full of artificial ingredients are fairly natural. Consider Caplico — fake candy ice cream cones. It would be hard to think of a food that looks more artificial.

However, a look at the label and it's not that bad.

Wheat flour, starch, sugar, vegetable oil (rapeseed oil, palm), yeast extract, salt, lactose, whole milk powder, cocoa butter, cocoa, milk, seasoning, almond paste, hazelnut paste, emulsifier, beet red color, caramel color, egg shell, artificial flavor, citric acid. Allergy Warning: Contains wheat, milk, almond, hazelnut, soybean.

Not too sure about "artificial flavor" and "emulsifier" but the rest looks fairly natural. I wouldn't call it health food but the ingredients don't scare me.

Ingredients may vary so check the label of the Caplico you buy. There are many varieties.
