Kichijoji: A Great University Neighbourhood in Tokyo

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, June 19, 2012

Kichijoji is home to Seikei University (a top private university). It's a perfect university town: full of cafes, shopping, bars and a huge park (Inokashira koen).

In a city of extremes Kichijoji is balanced. It's a residential neighborhood of families, university students, young professionals and the occasional hipster.

Kichijoji has a subculture element with concert halls (live houses) and hipster bars.

Kichijoji is a (relatively) quiet place to shop — as compared with the chaotic Shibuya and Shinjuku shopping areas. It's a popular spot for moms with young kids to shop.

Inokashira park (95 acres) is one of Tokyo's best parks. It's also one of the best hanami spots in Tokyo.

Kichijoji has various (smallish) festivals and events throughout the year.

Kichijoji is home to the Ghibli Studio and Museum (the powerhouse of the Japanese animation industry). Other anime companies have also located in Kichijoji.

Kichijoji is consistently rated amongst the best residential neighbourhoods in Tokyo (rents in the area reflect this). It's about 20 minutes by train from Shibuya.
