Meiji Shrine Brides of Tokyo

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, April 20, 2012

Japanese weddings are often Western style. In other cases, Shinto and Western styles are mixed into one ceremony.

When a ceremony is purely Shinto style it often takes place at a mock shrine in a hotel. This despite the fact that there are thousands of real shrines in Japan.

Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu) in Tokyo is one of the few shrines that hosts a large number of weddings. It's located in a 175 acre forest near Yoyogi park in Shibuya. Weddings here are always in the Shinto tradition.
