Miyamairi takes place 30 to 100 days after birth. Famous shrines perform hundreds of miyamairi a week. Some shrines offer the ceremony hourly on weekends (it costs around 10,000 yen).
The baby's immediate family and grandparents attend. A Shinto priest says a prayer for the baby. At the end of the ceremony, everyone takes a sip of sake from a red wooden cup.
Typically, the family goes for lunch after the ceremony and take the baby for his/her first professional photos.
