Onsen signs in Japan: I do the what now?

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, April 07, 2012

Most onsen fans will admit that they were a little nervous on their first visit to onsen. There are so many rules and so many things that could go wrong. Worst of all — what if you just don't like it?

Onsen usually have rules, warnings, information and advice posted. These are often in Japanese. If you don't speak Japanese your stuck trying to figure out the cute pictures.

Even when the signs are in English — the message is often far from clear.

Warning signs in Japan are often far too cute. Cute things just don't look scary enough when you can't read them. This sign is warning that an onsen pool is 80o Celsius (176 degrees Fahrenheit).

I guess i could say that i like to talk and i love to meet new people. I live in Wisconsin and all there is to do in Madison is drink, party read and wonder about the world. I always used to look at the pictures in my fathers National Geographic mags and think how cool it would be to see those places.

Hi, I would like to learn about Japan and also learn the language. I have been to Japan and I love learning about the culture. I enjoy talking about kimono and Anime. I like to read manga and I like to draw. I would love to talk to anyone who call tell me more about the Japanese culture and language. I would also like to learn about everyday things that students do in school and after school. I already know a little Japanese but I would like to learn more.I would love to hear from you!-Gillian

I am looking for someone to exchange languages and culture. I am more than willing to teach English in exchange for learning Japanese. I can't read much kanji or kana right now, but I am learning. I can however work out some romaji. I would like to visit Japan someday and would like to be able to speak clearly.
