Onuma Koen: A National Park in Hokkaido

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, February 27, 2012

Onuma Koen is a town and Quasi National Park near Hakodate at the southern tip of Hokkaido.

It's known for it's scenic dormant volcano: Mount Komaga-take and three island dotted lakes (128 islands). In summer, the lakes are a popular spot for boating, hiking and cycling.

There are extensive hiking and cycling trails in the area. It's possible to rent boats and bicycles in the town.

In winter ice fishing, cross country skiing, snow sledding, onsen and snowmobiling are the key attractions. The town builds snow sculptures and ice slides in the winter months.

The town (Onuma Koen) is also picturesque and friendly. There are several small restaurants, cafes and a micro brewery.

Onuma Koen is a popular side trip from Hakodate or stop between Sapporo and Hakodate. It was one of the first towns in Hokkaido to develop its tourist industry.
