Otome Road: Tokyo's Female Otaku Paradise

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, May 04, 2012

The world of Japanese otaku isn't as male oriented as people imagine. The fact is that there are almost as many females (as males) in Japan who're enthusiastic enough about Japanese pop culture to be considered otaku.

If Akihabara is paradise for Tokyo's male otaku then Ikebukuro is the the abode of Tokyo's girl geeks.

Otome Road (乙女ロード ~ literally: Maiden Road) is a shopping street in Ikebukuro that features Japanese pop culture shops with a distinctly female bent.

Some female otaku are interested in manga and anime stories about romantic relationships between men. Many of the otaku shops in Ikebukuro are highly focused on this manga genre.
