Poisonous snakes appear in Japanese history just as often as Geisha, Samurai and Ninja. There are dozens of varieties of snakes (and sea snakes) in Japan. Of these, several species are venomous. For example:
Japanese Mamushi
Tsushima Mamushi
Himehabu
Sakishima Habu
Habu
Tokarahabu
Okinawan Habu
Poisonous snakes are found on all of Japan's major islands. Okinawa has the most. There are snake warning signs posted in many areas of Japan.
If you're hiking in Japan it's advisable to wear long pants, proper shoes and socks. Each year thousands of people are hospitalized for poisonous snake bites in Japan. Of these, approximately 10 people die.
