Sakura season is everyone's favorite time of year in Japan. The exact dates of Sakura season are different year to year due to variations in weather. Sakura dates also vary by city and even by park (there are many different varieties of Sakura trees).
The following chart indicates the usual start dates
| Region | Usual Start Date |
| Okinawa | mid to late January |
| Kyushu | late March |
| Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara | end of March |
| Nagoya | end of March |
| Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Yokohama | end of March |
| Tohoku | mid to late April |

Depending on the variety of sakura and the weather — sakura season can be as short as 6 days and long as 21 days in any given location. The most popular (and common) variety of Sakura (Somei Yoshino) usually bloom and fall within a week.
