Shibuya Hikarie: Tokyo's Newest Department Store

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, May 26, 2012

Shibuya is a young neighborhood. When it comes to shopping, Shibuya is best known for Shibuya 109 — catering to women under 24.

Department stores such as Shibuya 109 have an intense environment. Many Tokyo women over 25 can't stand shopping in Shibuya.

The massive new Shibuya Hikarie is a department store, dining, entertainment, arts and office complex that hopes to change all that. They hope to attract career women ages 20-40 with 6 floors of upscale shopping. In Japan, women in this demographic have a great deal of disposable income.

The shopping mall (named ShinQs) offers member-only luxury powder rooms (called Switch Lounges). The complex also features two floors of food shopping, 2 floors of dining, art galleries, a museum, convention space and a 4 storey sky lounge and movie theatre. Floors 16 - 34 are offices. The building is connected directly to JR Shibuya station.

When Shibuya 109 opened in 1979 it also targeted career women ages 20-40. With time Shibuya won out and Shibuya 109 had to change it's formula. Tokyo career women prefer shopping in upscale, relaxed areas such as Ginza and Omotesando. Let's see if Shibuya Hikarie can change all that.
