Sugamo: What Tokyo Would Be Like If Everyone Were Over 80

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, March 27, 2012

Sugamo is known locally as "Harajuku for old ladies". Its main shopping street (Jizo-dori) is popular with Tokyo's over 80 set.

Sugamo is a station on the Yamanote line (the main loop line around downtown Tokyo). It's recommended for visitors to Tokyo — it's like stepping back in time and seeing what Japan was like in the 1950s.

There are many shops in the area that haven't changed for 70 years.

Prices are reminiscence of the 1950s too.

If you visit be sure to check out Toginuki Jizo Temple (on Jizo-dori).

The temple is known for it's Jizo statue. If you have health problems rub the part of the statue's body that's ailing you. It's said to have the power to heal. Given all the elderly in the area — the statue is popular (expect a line).
