Sympathy for the Devil in Sapporo

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, February 07, 2012

Sapporo is a cold place in winter to stand outside looking for customers.

When I first moved to Japan many years ago I disliked Japanese Hosutos (male hostesses). The reason — they stand on the street and harass every lady that walks by (to go to their club). They can be quite aggressive.

Perhaps, I've been in Japan too long — now I just feel sympathy for male hosuto.

Female hostess is an easy job — good money and no hustling for customers out on the street. Just drinking with customers and talking. Hosuto on the other hand rarely last more than a month. They must find their own customers. They are paid only out of drink sales they generate. Each month they are ranked and compared to each other. It's a tough world.

Most of these guys aren't smashingly good looking — they depend on a certain atmosphere that some women like. They need to be funny and witty.

Hosuto take hundreds of rejections for every customer they find.

They are young working class kids with few economic prospects. Most will fail at being a hosuto and move on to blue collar jobs. Some will remain in the underworld for their entire careers — working in bars, hostess clubs and red light establishments.
