Astroboy
Takadanobaba's main claim to fame is that it's the hometown of fictional character Astroboy. Astroboy is one of Japan's earliest and best known cartoon characters.The melody played at JR Takadanobaba Station (to denote train departures) is from Astroboy. There are also several Astroboy murals in the area.
University Town
Takadanobaba is home to Waseda University — one of Japan's largest and most prestigious schools. Another elite school, Gakushuin University, is located in nearby Mejiro.
In late evening Takadanobaba's cheap izakaya fill with students.
Shops in the area focus on the student demographic — cheap clothing stores and 100 yen shops. There's a large mall near Takadanobaba called Big Box.
The area also has plenty of cheap eateries.
Location
Takadanobaba is located between Shin-Okubo (Korea town) and Meijiro station on Yamanote line. It's not far from Shinjuku.
