The Belly Button Festival of Japan

posted by Yuki, Japan Talk, November 27, 2011

The Furano Belly Button Dance Festival (Furano Heso Matsuri) happens in the last days of July each year. It's mostly about painting your belly and putting a mushroom hat on — then you dance the belly button dance.

Much beer is consumed and fun is had by all. Furano is a small village on the northern island of Japan (Hokkaido). The first Heso Matsuri only attracted 11 participants. These days it attracts more than 5000 people each year.
