The Super Gaijin

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, April 13, 2012

Ask any Japanese person — you can't become Japanese.

Many Japanese people are open minded. Many like foreigners and welcome them to Japan with open arms. However, this idea is deeply engrained in Japanese thinking — Japanese is something you are (not something you can become).

They're wrong. There are foreigners living in Japan who have become more Japanese than Japanese. The gaijins with near perfect Japanese. The gaijins who are seeking the perfect tea ceremony. The gaijins who practice martial arts with diligence and dedication.

There are foreigners in Japan who always seem to be taking their vacation at a temple or spending their Saturday afternoon at tea ceremony — The Super Gaijin.
