The Tokyo Desert of Loneliness

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, October 31, 2011

Tokyo Desert — describes an odd phenomenon in Tokyo life.

Tokyo may be the most entertaining and active city in the world — but it's filled with lonely people. The Tokyo desert.

Japan is traditionally a agrarian society (farming) with close knit community ties. In modern times, the younger generations have moved to cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Sapporo — leaving farming communities filled with elderly people.

Japanese people tend to be shy. Traditionally, it didn't matter because you lived in close knit communities. The cold city is no place for shy people.

It All Works Out

Toyko people deal with the desert in three ways: drinking, working hard and joining activities.

Shy people love drinking — it helps them to open up.
