The Zabuton Politeness Game

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, January 11, 2012

Zabuton are thin square mats used to sit on traditional Japanese floors (tatami). They're only a few centimeters thick (when new).

When someone offers you a zabuton to sit on — you should refuse in a humble gesture. Only when they insist should you actually sit on the zabuton. In some cases, you can refuse it all together and just sit on the tatami floor.

Such hardcore humble manners were once common in Japan but are in decline. The act of humbling refusing such a minimal comfort as a 3 cm thick mat says a great deal about Japanese culture.
