Tokyo Arcade Spectacular

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, November 14, 2011

No trip to Tokyo is complete without ducking into an arcade.

In the West arcades peaked in the early 1980s — these days they are few and far between. The Japanese arcade is still running strong — they're everywhere in Tokyo.

Some Japanese arcades are ultra modern while others are antiques.

It's not unusual for Japanese arcades to have some light gambling.

Tokyo arcades may also have photobooths (pirikura). Sometimes, single men aren't allow in the pirikura area.

Arcades are found in virtually every major Tokyo neighborhood. Especially in otaku haunts such as Akihabara. Salary men enjoy arcades on weekends.

School kids also enjoy arcades but are not allowed to enter during school hours.

Arcades are a great place for photography. Vintage arcades in particular. Arcades tend to have plenty of strange curiosities.

First of all, I'm sorry about the crappy picture quality! Things always seem to mess up once I upload them to the internet. I also have a lot of pictures up! Once I started uploading them, I just kept finding more that I liked. ^-^" Sorry about that!Hello! I'm Cassie & my birthday is May 6, 1994 (shh! I'm not really 18!). I'm in the process of learning the Japanese language. I've wanted to learn it ever since I first watched Pokemon in preschool. From the beginning, I just knew that all things Japanese would be magical & wonderful to me. My school offered a Japanese class when I was in 9th grade, but after my first year they decided not to offer it anymore. I was so excited for Japanese 2, but it all ended with disappointment. Now I'm learning Japanese on my own! It'll be tough, but it'll be worth so much to me! Someday, I'll travel to Japan and maybe live there. And if I decide not to live there, I'll become a Japanese teacher in the U.S., to help people just like myself.I also enjoy the Japanese culture, too. Right now I'm trying to save my money (which is very tough for me) to buy a kimono. There are a lot of other clothes I'd like to buy, too, but kimonos are very beautiful!I joined Japan Talk to make new friends & to find a Japanese Pen Pal to help me with learning about the Japanese language and culture. I would love to send and receive mail with a penpal from Japan. I can also help you with English! Feel free to e-mail me, also. It's not as fun as postal mail, but it's okay. If you would like my e-mail address, just send me a message on this website. Or if you'd like, we can talk on here, too. I love making new friends, because the feeling of friendship is the best feeling!はじめまして。私はカシーです。私はアメリカ人ですから、私は日本語をすこし話します。でも、英語をよく話します。I really don't feel like typing a lot right now, because I can't think of anything to type...じゃ、またね。
