Tokyo City Hall was the tallest building in Tokyo for 15 years (1991 ~ 2006). The main tower of the building splits into two at the top. Both are 243 meters (799 feet) tall.



Tokyo City Hall is located in the massive West Shinjuku business district.

Both towers have a free observation deck on the 45th floor (202 meters high). It's the best place to see Tokyo's amazing skyline.



The building's architects (Kenzo Tange) designed Tokyo City Hall to look like a computer chip. It's generally agreed it doesn't. Several prominent commentators have suggested it looks more like a Gothic cathedral.



The building cost ¥157 billion (about US$ 2 billion) — it was fairly controversial at the time of its construction (as a waste of tax payer money).

The complex also includes a 8 story and 37 story building (known as building #2).



Tokyo City Hall makes regular appearances in Japanese popular culture such as manga and anime. Naturally, it has been destroyed by Godzilla in various films.
