posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, March 25, 2012

Route 246 is the most famous highway in Japan. In a city with winding, short roads — route 246 is a wide straight road that cuts through the heart of Tokyo.

Route 246 starts in Chiyoda, Tokyo and ends in Numazu, Shizuoka. It's 122.7 kilometers (76.2 miles) long. Along the way it passes through some of Tokyo's most famous neighbourhoods including Aoyama, Omotesando and Shibuya.

At places the road is an upscale urban shopping street. At other places it's a ugly suburban highway, at other places it's (almost) a quiet country road.
