Tokyo Sky Tree

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, May 24, 2012

Tokyo Sky Tree is the World's second tallest structure at 634.0 meters (2,080 feet). It's designed as a landmark to attract tourists and as a broadcasting tower.

The tower took four years to construct and cost around 40 billion yen (440 million USD). It incorporates innovative wind and earthquake proof features including 100 ton tuned mass dampers.

Tokyo Sky Tree dominates the Tokyo skyline and can be seen from all over the city. Tokyo is a remarkably low rise city for its size (due to the cost of earthquake proofing large buildings).

Tokyo Sky Tree broadcasts many of the signals formerly broadcast by Tokyo Tower. Tokyo Tower had become too short relative to the surrounding buildings to broadcast to the Kanto region. Tokyo Sky Tree is almost twice as high as Tokyo Tower.

The tower can be dynamically lit with computer controlled led lights.
