Vocaloids
posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, January 05, 2012
Vocaloids are singing voices that are released with voice synthesizer software. They have associated personas that have become virtual celebrities in Japan.
Vocaloids are based on a Yamaha voice synthesis engine (Vocaloid, Vocaloid 2 and Vocaloid 3). Companies license the vocaloid engine and release vocaloids with an associated character. The singing voice in vocaloids is based on the voice or voices of real people.
Major Japanese record companies have released hundreds of songs using vocaloid technology. Fans of popular vocaloids have released over 100,000 vocaloid based music videos on YouTube and Nico Nico Douga (a Japanese video site).
Vocaloid characters such as Hatsune Miku perform concerts as 3D projections.
