Yosakoi is a modernization of Awa Odori — a traditional Japanese summer dance. The important thing about Yosakoi is that it has made traditional dances popular again in Japan.
These days there are over 200 Yosakoi festivals and competitions each year in Japan. Virtually every high school, university and college has a team. There are also many community teams that mix dancers of various ages.
Yosakoi means "come at night". It's a high energy summer dance based on traditional movements and modern music.
Teams often design their own dance costumes. Costumes are usually colorful and draw upon traditional inspirations such as yukata summer kimono.
