Why Walking is Rude in Japan

posted by Midori, Japan Talk, October 30, 2011

Walking can be rude in Japan — but it all depends what you have in your hand.

Smoking

Walking down the street while smoking is one of the biggest no-nos in Japan. In many areas it's illegal.

There's a practical reason. Japan is a highly urban society. If you're walking with a cigarette there is a good chance to burn someone or blow smoke in someone's face.

Like many of Japan's rules of manners and etiquette — it makes good sense. If you live in Japan long enough you'll wish every country had this rule.

Food and Drinks

There are excellent vending machines and convenience stores everywhere in Japan.

In the old days, it was considered rude to walk while drinking or eating something. It's still considered to be a low class thing to do. You'll still see many people buying a drink from a machine — then drinking the entire drink while standing beside the machine.

Walking and Talking

Loud public conversations on mobile devices are rude in Japan. Walking down the street while loudly gabbing on the phone isn't cool in Japan. It will annoy people. If you do need to talk on the phone it's best to be quiet and discrete. Stand off in a corner somewhere and keep your voice down.

It also might save you from being hit by a truck.

こんちは。This is the abbreviation of こんにちは。 Well, nobody may use this greeting any more I think.... By the way, I just graduated from a community college and am about to transfer. I personally think that I need to improve my English skills as much as possible until I get in university. If you are interested in Japan or anything related to Japan, just give me a message so that we can exchange language and some sort of stuff like hobbies, cultural things or history, and so on. I finally got released from college work, having a plenty of my free time on my vacation. I am now trying new things such as cooking and collecting the info for Japanese fashion style since I am planning to be a buyer as a part time job. Oh, I just participated in a meet up group which is organized with Japanese and Americans who are enthusiastic about Japan and met one American geek who loves Japanese comedy. I think people have to be comprehensive in the language and culture in order to understand the comedy in different countries. I want to aver that if you understand Japanese and its culture, Japanese comedy will ever come over your world that you have not experienced. Let's have a fun.
