The World's Highest Escalator in Osaka

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, February 17, 2012

The Umeda Sky Building in Osaka is only the 12th tallest building in the city but in many ways it's the most amazing.

See the circle at the top of the building? There are two escalator shafts coming out of it — the World's tallest escalator.

The escalator leads to the Umeda Sky Building's Floating Garden Observatory.

The top of the escalator is 173 meters (567 feet) above the ground. It has glass walls so that you can check out the view.

The Umeda Sky Building escalator may seem like one of the worst places to be during a major earthquake in Japan. However, it's probably relatively safe. Generally, large buildings are safer than small buildings and houses.

The Umeda Sky Building is one of Osaka's best attractions. If you visit, be sure to check out the urban garden between the two towers. There's also some interesting restaurants in the basement designed to look like Japan before WWII (early Showa-era).
