Yoyogi Park: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, April 19, 2012

Yoyogi Park has several claims to fame. It's one of the largest parks in Tokyo (134 acres). It's where they held the opening ceremonies of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It was the site of the first successful powered aircraft flight in Japan. It's located between the two busiest neighbourhoods in Tokyo: Shinjuku and Shibuya.

None of these facts explains much about the park at all. Yoyogi park is something of an enigma. It's the most vibrant park in Japan.

If you go to Yoyogi park on any given Sunday — you'll run into well-off local residents walking their dogs and playing with their kids. You may also run into belly dancers practicing or actors rehearsing a scene. You may also run into random intoxicated people, massive parties, lovers wasting the day away, tourists with huge cameras, a decora fashion happening, a hip hop concert or members of the Tokyo Rockabilly Club swinging to the hits of the 1950s.

It's really a dynamic, interesting place.
