Yurakucho : The Tokyo Neighbourhood That Hasn't Changed Since WWII

posted by John Spacey, Japan Talk, May 31, 2012

Almost everything has changed in Tokyo since the start of WWII. During the war, most of Tokyo burned to the ground. Tokyo's massive economic growth in the 1950s to 1970s meant that most of the city's land was redeveloped. By the 1980s, Tokyo had the most expensive land in the World.

The only places that haven't change much since the war are a handful of temples, shrines and cemeteries. If you're looking for a charming old Tokyo neighborhood — your best bet is Yurakucho.

Yurakucho is located where the gates of Edo-castle once stood. It's in the middle of the old part of town sandwiched between Ginza, Shimbashi and Hibiya park. It's packed with old fashioned outdoor dining establishments such as yakitori restaurants.

Yurakucho is a popular spot for salary men to hit on weeknights. It's relatively quiet on weekends.

Many of Yurakucho's restaurants are located under the Japan Rail (JR) train tracks. They shake a little as trains pass overhead.

Yurakucho is ranked #6 of 8 best Salary Man neighborhoods in Tokyo

I am looking for someone to exchange languages and culture. I am more than willing to teach English in exchange for learning Japanese. I can't read much kanji or kana right now, but I am learning. I can however work out some romaji. I would like to visit Japan someday and would like to be able to speak clearly.
