my uneducated say is yes
I've been interested in japan ever since i can remember. from what i remember in high school a lot of the kids tried to get me to join the anime club which i did for maybe a month...it was alright but a little strange for my taste. most of the kids i talked to that were interested in japan are i guess what you would call nerds or social outcasts haha. the picture above is pretty general though those people may not be "nerds" just cosplay enthusiasts. a good number of us aren't though a lot who don't have any japanese relations or blood are... thats what i've seen but im not going to say all are weirdos or all aren't im a mix and certainly am not weird.
well i think so?! = D

No!
Being interested in anoter culture is not nerdy. Its just what we like. Would you say a Japanese person who was interested in American culture was nerdy? No. I love the Japanese culture. I think its awesome. Being a nerd isn't what your interested in. Its more in the way you act or go about doing your hobbies.

No.
The majority are well-dressed and well-behaved. The "nerdy" ones you notice more because they stand out. But they are a minority.

It depends
Well I am, and have been for a very long time, interested in the Japanese culture ( Mainly because; I wish my hair could be as cool as all the Japanese guys, the technology, cars, women, music, almost everything). I guess you can consider me a "nerd" mostly because I am very fluent with computers and play video games.
Where I am from in California I knew others that were highly inclined towards Japanese culture, we would talk a bit though never cosplayed ( I sort of find it odd) even though I love anime (FMA, Bleach, Death Note, ect..)
We call those who really love the Japanese culture and take it over the edge a "weaboo" in the US. It is a negative word though.
For the positive term, and for the less obsessive, we call ourselves "Otakus" which I know you know is Japanese.

Interesting thoght
If you look at the majority of people who are (into) all things Japan in today's society most are either Tech heads or Anime lovers and unfortunatly and unfairly (imo) are labled nerds. I am in the tech feild and yes i like anime but i do not consider myself a nerd.
I have loved the Japanese culture sense i was twelve years old well before the japanese economy boomed and anime flooded our culture.
I am not at the level of being a weaboo but the japanese culture fits my personality much better than does the american one.

???
Oh wow, never thought about it liked that. Well, I am not really into anime and computers hate me. I loved many cultures, but Japan is probably my favorite. One reason quite a few of them are small like me, I don't get pick on being thin lol. I also grew up with exchange students from Japan.
I just like their sense of humor for the most part (esp. game shows).
But strangely I do think of myself as a nerd or a dork but i loved it.
Keep it weird!!!!! everything else is boring to me.

yes? ;)
I guess it all depends on the definition of "nerd". If you define it as nerd==geek, then I definitely fit the bill. However, the times where geeks could come to work wearing unwashed rags and reek of cheap aftershave are long gone. I love good-looking clothes, both casual and suits, and I don't talk l33t. Sometimes I'm a dork, but it's no worse then average.
Also, if reading manga and watching lots of anime makes you a nerd, then I definitely am one, too.
I think that now that the time of frontline innovation has moved from Japan to China mostly, there is a greater percentage of fan people, nerds, freaks and other strange species of people among those going to our favorite islands ;)

HAHAHA
Yeah Im a Nerd sometimes . But you wouldnt be able to tell if you saw me .

|
yeah...
many but not all gaijin are rather nerdy. like in hs all my japanese class classmates were huge huge otaku. my friends would try to console me and give me sympathy for my japanese class situation... the thing is though, all those otaku were rlly nice people. i used to be embarrassed to be seen around them but eventually realized that i didnt have to be ashamed about my initial d obsession around them. unfortunately i think most otaku are misunderstood.
