I'll be going to Japan for business and leisure for 7 days from July 4th... I love to explore Japanese culture, life style, make friends with local Japanese,... HOW can I make it ? I can speak English, and a little bite of Japanese. (1)

I am currently enlisted in the United States Army, and well to be honest it's one of the areas I imagined myself being in life. Though to be honest that previous statement has very little to do with what I want to ask. (1)

"If you are accepted you will need to renouce your original citizenship at the same time that you receive your Japanese passport. In practice some people secretly retain both citizenships .. it depends how tolerate your home country is to this arrangement."

I have a question in regards to this statement. If you become a Japanese citizen here in Japan. How can you secretly hide your original citizenship? Japan knows that you are a citizen from your original country. Just a curious.

I am not a lawyer so please check in detail with an expert if its important to you. But I believe the requirements for Japanese naturalization are:

1. have lived continuously in Japan for five years

2. Be over twenty years old and have full mental capacity.

3. behave well (they will check your personal conduct). Not sure exactly what that means. But they may ask for references??

d) demonstrate means to support your family

e) be willing to relinquish the citizenship of your native country

f) respect the Japanese Constitution (ie. if your a known anarchist or something you can't get in).

They will ask for for loads of documentation to prove the above points. It will take a few years. If you are accepted you will need to renouce your original citizenship at the same time that you receive your Japanese passport. In practice some people secretly retain both citizenships .. it depends how tolerate your home country is to this arrangement.

Japan doesn't recognize dual cizitenships. If you become naturalize here, you will lose your current citizenship. Something to think about.
